Kenosha Foodies

Kenosha Foodies is a food club in Kenosha, WI that meets monthly and is hosted on a rotating basis by it's members. The idea is to cook and eat great food and have fun doing it. The host selects a theme for the evening and creates and prepares the menu. Anything goes. Pushing out of the comfort zone is encouraged.

February 2009 Gather

Another year is upon us and although we have been enjoying our monthly foodie gathers throughout 2008, it seems like a great time to start posting again on our blog spot. It has been another cold and snowy winter for us here in Wisconsin but as usual, we will ride into spring with some excellent foodie gathers. Beth and I hope that this months effort will not fail to please. We have decided to visit some recipes from the moors of Scotland for our theme this month. Listed below are some of the dishes we will be preparing for Saturday, February 7th:

Appetizers:
Potted Kippers - a mildly spiced spread of smoked herring, anchovy, shallot and fresh dill
Assorted cheeses
Assorted crackers and crusty bread
Scottish oatcakes with blue cheese, walnuts and watercress

Soup:
Hearty lentil soup with bacon and herbs

Main Course:
Scottish salmon resting on savoy cabbage with a mushroom vinaigrette
Rumbledethumps - Celtic potato, cabbage and cheese gratin

Dessert:
Absolutely sinful sticky toffee pudding with pecan toffee sauce

Although not anticipated, some variations may occur due to chef's error or recipe failure.

We look forward to seeing you this Saturday.

The Foodies Return For 2008

After a seven month hiatus the Kenosha Foodies have returned for another year of dining excellence. Our reunion gather was held at the home of Kim and Beth Dary on New Years Eve, 2007. I must say that it was a wonderful evening and it was great to reunite the group for what will most certainly be another run of culinary fancy. The goal of the hosts on this, the eve of another year, was to provide appetizers representative of the arrival of the New Year around the globe. Listed below are most of the items enjoyed coupled with their home of origin:

Japan Sushi (seaweed wrapped sushi rice, cucumber, smoked salmon with wasabi, teryaki and soy dip as desired)

Korea Hot Kim Chee (spicy pickled won boc cabbage)

Australia Cheese and Sage Damper (a dense, round loaf of seasoned and cheesy bread)

France Tapenade (we served two varieties of this chopped, seasoned cracker spread)

Morocco Moroccan Potato and Bean Soup (well seasoned and spicy)

New York Cheesecake

Hawaii Kalua Pig (smoked pork shoulder slow cooked and shredded)

Beth and I would like to thank Don, Peggy and Dan for joining us and for providing some excellent beverage options. We hope that you enjoyed your evening as much as we did. We look forward to our next gather which will be hosted by Don and Peggy February 2nd. Until then, Bon Apetite...

Break out the GRILL!!

It's Memorial Day weekend and time for some serious, if relatively simple, grilled food. We'll start with a simple cheese course followed by a salad of greens, grilled peaches and a vinaigrette.

The main course will be a grilled Chicken Caesar on Ciabatta and a grilled Southwestern Potato Salad. MMMMmmmm!

For dessert we'll have a Pineapple and Frangipane Galette.

The fun begins at 6:30 Saturday May 26th. Bring your appetite!

Tax Time Extravagance

Happy April Kenosha Foodies! As the snow flies in our area today, I am planning our next foodie gather. For this excusion I am going very taditional Americana. Not that I/we are not willing to delve into very non-traditional menu items, but at this juncture I feel the need for some good, comfortable, and basic fare. My intentions for our April gather are as follows:

Shrimp Cocktail
Mandarin Citrus Salad
Bacon Wrapped Tenderloin of Beef Filets
Baked Potato with Sour Cream/Blue Cheese/Chive Topping
Brussell Sprouts
Turtle Cheesecake

If this meets with your apporval, we will be serving the initial course at 6:30 pm on Saturday, April 14th. Beth and I hope to see you then.

January Foodie Gather

Well, as the new year is soon to be 1/12th over it is time to bring the Kenosha Foodies together again. For this culinary episode we will be sampling some cuisine from an equally winter laden area of the globe. We have chosen a menu with a Noregian flavor. This session of the KFG will be hosted by Beth and Kim Dary and is scheduled for January 27th. Appetizers will commence at 6:30 pm. Listed below you will find the menu for the evening with most of the recipes being taken from the Sons of Norway website, www.sofn.com. The recipe for the main course of this meal was taken from www.recipezaar.com.

Pickled and Creamed Herring Filets
Pureesuppe (leek soup)
Agurksalat (European cucumber salad)
Andreas Viestad's Pork Rib Roast with Cloves
Lefse (Norwegian potatoe flat bead)
Festive Cream Cake

We would like to thank Don and Peggy again for a wonderful New Year's Eve dinner experience. It was also very nice that Dan Brooks was able to join us. If he is not otherwise engaged, his company would be welcome at this gather as well.
